October Brief – Community Health Workers: Fighting Food Insecurity and Health Inequities from Within

In times of crisis and where language, culture, or immigration status are a barrier to more formal forms of aid, Community Health Workers or Promotores de Salud have served as a community link, helping others navigate a health care system that has traditionally excluded them, while removing barriers to wellness.

NHF’s Community Initiatives department includes a team of Promotoras that collaborate altogether on food insecurity work, community activism and engagement, and support related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this brief, we outline the key strategies implemented by NHF Promotoras for tackling food insecurity and other health inequities within communities, in addition to NHF’s successes in expanding the CHW model.
